Teaching Quality
MCUT emphasizes maintaining and improving teaching quality as a critical educational characteristic. To achieve real-time teaching improvements and enhance the learning experience, MCUT has implemented systems such as teaching quality and assessment systems. In addition to focusing on teaching quality, we also value the opinions and feedback from both students and teachers. We gather valuable input for administrative improvements in university affairs by conducting regular satisfaction surveys.
Holistic General Education
In response to social expectations for improving local industrial research and development capabilities with the help of vocational education, MCUT has been dedicated to teaching and research in recent years. In addition, it has established the concept of "Holistic Education" and set up a General Education Center to put this concept into practice. The center offers three categories of general education courses: co-curricular, formal curriculum, and latent curriculum.
Among the three categories of curriculums, the 'Core Courses' in the formal curriculum stand out with their unique features. These courses, such as 'University Way,' 'Design Thinking,' and 'Diligence Education,' are designed to help students adapt to campus life, plan their schedules effectively, and embody the school motto of 'Diligence and Perseverance.' By participating in community and campus environmental maintenance work, students are expected to cultivate an independent diligence concept and implement life education. The diverse elective general education courses, including those in the fields of Foreign Language and Globalization, Humanity and Art, Social Sciences, Natural Science, and Autonomous Learning, further enrich students' connotations.
The Great Learning
To ensure that students can have an extensive understanding of each field, MCUT has established “Regulations on the Implementation of the Course of The Great Learning” with contents covering:
(1) Introduction to the characteristics of colleges and departments: Deans of various colleges are invited to introduce the characteristics of colleges and departments to first-year students at each college; directors or senior teachers from each department are invited to introduce teaching characteristics of the departments to students from other departments, thus promoting students’ diversified learning concepts.
(2) Exploratory learning: Scholars and industry experts are invited to teach small classes on various themes, including humanities, history, landscape, ecology, environment, and traditional skills, in regions near the university and organize field visits for students to experience local cultures.
(3) Autonomous learning: To cultivate students’ initiative to learn actively, MCUT has planned an autonomous learning model in the course of University Way, e.g., units like “Playfulness” and “There’s Always Someone Better.” Students are required to engage in autonomous learning and write reports regarding their experiences and feelings.
(4) Mindfulness meditation: Each first-year class is divided into two small classes for two sessions per class. Teachers will lecture the course at the “Mindfulness Center” or other appropriate places to cultivate students’ inner qualities like empathy, kindness, inclusiveness, benevolence, and patience and improve their perception and concentration.
Design Thinking
MUCT teachers with seeds or practical experience of design thinking form a team and promote design thinking in the form of a design thinking workshop so students can continually expand and converge the interaction of thinking to generate innovative solutions that comply with users’ needs through the process of design thinking and design practice and finally cultivate basic innovative and creative thinking and practical abilities.
Diligence Education
This curriculum design aims to cultivate students’ good living habits and physical fitness to carry out moral education. By participating in the campus environment maintenance work, students can develop their concept of independent and diligent work and implement life education; furthermore, it can improve students’ moral cultivation and raise their awareness to care about the living environment around them and maintain common learning spaces. This course includes campus cleaning, classroom and dormitory cleaning, and 8-hour volunteer services. By rendering volunteer services, we can fulfill citizen responsibilities, practice humanistic care, and implement moral education.
Improvement of Language Ability and Strengthening of Physical Fitness
To improve students' interest in MCUT’s Undergraduate Programme in English learning, enhance the English learning effect, and improve students’ English ability, we have established “Measures of MCUT for Rewarding the Improvement of Students’ English Ability.” Students who obtain English test certificates while studying at MCUT may apply for scholarships based on these certificates or manuscripts. The scholarships differ due to the different grades of certificates received. Students with a TOEIC score above 500 points may apply for subsidizing of registration fees; students who pass the re-examination of intermediate grade of General English Proficiency Test (TOEIC score above 550 points) may apply for a scholarship of NT$ 2,000; students who pass the re-examination of intermediate and advanced grades of General English Proficiency Test (TOEIC score above 785 points) may apply for a scholarship of NT$ 4,000.
To improve students’ health and cultivate their concept of exercise, MCUT began to implement sports graduation thresholds for first-year students admitted in the academic year 2011. The Office of Physical Education uniformly implements a swimming threshold test in the first semester of the third university year. Students must swim 25 meters using any stroke, such as freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, or butterfly. Also, senior students must complete a campus road race within 35 minutes to meet the requirements in the current academic year. According to the statistics, the average pass rate for the swimming threshold test for graduation is 99.65%; additionally, the average pass rate for the campus road race is 99.52%. These figures indicate that the graduation threshold can enhance students’ physical health and energy. Furthermore, students are expected to continue their exercise habits.
Establishing Ming Chi Art and Selecting Resident Artists
The General Education Center established an action-oriented office in the 2013 academic year to integrate relevant resources and combine local characteristics. It formed the “Art and Culture Team” to promote relevant business. During the first meeting of the Center in 2014, “Regulations on the Management of Ming Chi Art” and “Implementation Regulations Governing Hosting of Artists and Professional Artist Groups by Ed” were established. In recent years, several resident artists were successively hired, and multiple art and culture activities were held to improve students’ ambiance with literature and art.
Adhering to the concept of USR Practice, “Ming-Chi Art” promotes the spirits of local art and culture, provides local art performance groups with the best exhibition places and arranges multiple performance sessions of different natures, including music, theatre, and dance as well as art exhibitions with diverse media materials like painting, calligraphy and drum art, thus improving the atmosphere of art and culture in Taishan region with diversified and abundant art and culture feasts and expanding the artistic vision of MCUT teachers and students and residents.
Student Club Activities
To promote students’ physical and mental health and diverse learning, we have established relevant regulations governing the counseling of student club activities and subsidizing funds for these activities to assist the clubs in handling characteristic activities; furthermore, relevant measures regarding club instructors have been established. Each club shall continually hire at least 1-3 instructors and utilize the overall development subsidies from the Ministry of Education and self-prepared budget as expenses for club instructors’ guidance services. To maintain the motive of students participating in various clubs for continual learning, MCUT encourages them to participate in club communication or observation and emulation competitions with funding subsidies and incentive measures to acquire precious experience from different schools. Furthermore, we expect that students from these clubs can actively participate in contests to reinform their learning ability (second expertise). Therefore, various clubs are encouraged to participate in off-campus and inter-school competitions. The university's student clubs are classified into five attributes: Autonomy, artistry, athletics, service, and fellowship. In the 2022 academic year, there were 47 clubs at MCUT.
Mingchi Academy
To create a favorable campus learning atmosphere, continue the earnest scholarly pursuit of Mingzhi Academy, motivate both teachers and students to grow together through education, and inspire students to seek the meaning of life and self-recognition through reading, MUCT has established Mingchi Academy under which there are “Dun-Lin Academy,” “Hui Hsin Academy” and “I Ming Academy,” to strengthen students’ core capabilities for “Communication, Continual Learning, Emotional Management, Interpersonal Interaction, Teamwork, Problem-solving, Active Innovation and Disciplines and Responsibilities.”
Dun-Lin Academy
“Dun-Lin” indicates an empathetic leadership style. By participating in “Dun-Lin Academy,” students can learn leadership knowledge through activities or an informal curriculum and realize the unity of knowing and doing leadership through the execution and planning of student affairs.
Li Tse Academy
MCUT launched the Li Tse Academy Project in the 2022 academic year (September 2022). The academy aims to promote communication between overseas students and local students of MCUT by integrating it with general education courses. This will include global literacy and cross-cultural awareness and build a communication bridge between students from different countries and regions through various engaging activities. The academy has implemented a shared accommodation project for overseas and local students to cultivate international viewpoints in their lives. Additionally, practical sessions on global cuisines and the sharing of traditional stories have been organized to allow students to share the unique cuisines of their countries and learn to respect different cultures. The Li Tse Academy also encourages overseas and local students to work together to visit local libraries, introduce children to traditional cultures and famous stories from foreign countries, and improve their English communication ability. This initiative, therefore, will also actively practice university social responsibility. Furthermore, local students are invited to participate as overseas exchange students and transnational camp partners, engaging in off-campus activities and using English for guided tours. This will foster students' international competitiveness and provide them with an internationalized experience without traveling abroad, explicitly implementing local internationalization.
Hui Hsin Academy
“Hui Hsin” means a kind and caring heart. Through participating in university social responsibility affairs, students can have a deeper understanding of various social issues in different aspects. We believe such a mindset will bring the best rewards and foster a sense of caring and responsibility towards society.
I Ming Academy
Modern life often brings a lot of stress, leaving people feeling breathless. Practicing simple mindfulness exercises can create a space for relaxation. These exercises can help students reduce stress and develop qualities such as empathy, kindness, inclusiveness, benevolence, and patience, which can positively impact their overall quality of life.
Control of Teaching Quality
MCUT has had a "Teaching Quality System" in place since 2004. This system consists of three levels: "Learning Guidance" (involving class mentors who assist students through the class operation system), "Teaching Quality" (involving department directors who assist each course teacher through the department operation system), and "Teaching Control" (involving the Office of Academic Affairs, which helps all teachers through the teaching control system).
The impact of the teaching quality system is evident in students' learning evaluation reports after several years of implementation. These reports assess the learning outcomes of students at each college, department, and class. Students receive early warnings and post-counseling to address issues related to their reading skills, adjustment to college life, and even their psychological well-being. This creates a caring and supportive learning environment, and continuity of counseling is ensured even after students transition to new mentors. The teaching quality system operates at three levels - early warning, remedial teaching, and counseling - which are implemented at the beginning, middle, and end of each semester respectively.
Teaching assessment System
For the teaching assessment of all full-time and part-time teachers, the response rate of teaching assessment of each course shall reach 70% or above, and then it can be deemed as effective scoring in teaching assessment. The average result of teaching assessment per course ranges from 60 points to 70 points (not including the given figure). Each college shall send letters to remind the following. If the average evaluation score of full-time and part-time teachers is below 70 points, an explanation form shall be filled out, and the relevant department or college supervisor shall assist with confirmation or counseling. Those requiring counseling shall participate in the teaching study held at the Teaching and Learning Resource Center. Full-time teachers who fail to reach 60 points are not allowed to take on additional teaching hours in the next academic year; part-time teachers who fail to reach 60 points will not be continually employed as recommended. To ensure the quality of the course teaching, teaching quality promotion committees involving three levels, i.e., departments, colleges, and universities, have been established at MCUT. The university-level and the college-level teaching quality promotion committees shall convene two meetings every semester, respectively. In comparison, the department-level teaching quality promotion committee shall convene two meetings every semester.
Satisfaction Survey of University Administration
To understand the satisfaction of teachers and students with the services of MCUT, we conduct an annual satisfaction survey in the form of a questionnaire as a reference for the improvement of service quality by each unit. While encouraging all our teachers and students to actively fill out questionnaires and provide various previous opinions, we conduct questionnaire surveys and collect their views and responses anonymously to protect their privacy and respect their freedom to express their opinions. The objects of the questionnaire survey include students, teachers, and employees; the survey items include the physical environment, professional quality, service attitude, service and administration efficiency, and computerized system; satisfaction degrees are classified into “Satisfied,” “Acceptable,” and “Dissatisfied.” If the respondents are extremely dissatisfied with specific recommendations in the questionnaire, they will be forwarded to each business management unit, which is required to draft improvement measures and then submit them to the President. The questionnaire survey results will also be reported at administration meetings. In 2023, the results of the overall satisfaction survey in five aspects indicated that more than 85% of survey items were evaluated as “Satisfied.” The administration units shall strengthen the recommendations on service quality and classify them as strengthening of service attitude, improvement of administration process efficiency and digital informatization and future prospects, etc. According to the analysis of opinion feedback, the number of appointed employees at several administration units was higher. The work stability and familiarity of these employees can easily cause differences in reciprocal cognition, which can affect the service attitude. Therefore, service quality shall be enhanced through education and training.
