Charity Fundraising Event by Educational Institutions

Since 2008, Chairwoman Wang Yueh-hui of the Taishan Volunteer Association has transformed her ancestral home, 'Wang Family Courtyard,' located in the Taishan District, into a charity hub. Personally investing in tools such as mixers, steamers, and iron frames, she engages in the entire process of handmade buns – from kneading flour, adding ingredients, fermenting, shaping, to steaming. Through the sale of handmade buns, the proceeds are donated to the local vulnerable communities. In the academic year 2022, as part of the 'Path of University' initiative, the course 'Artistic Weaving – Taishan Handcrafted Bamboo Weaving' invited Chairman Cai Huang-a of the Xinbei Zongneng Association to guide students in crafting bamboo baskets. These works, in collaboration with the Taishan Volunteer Association's program 'Buns of Love, Noodles of Care – Taishan Wang Family Courtyard Love Inheritance,' saw students weaving bamboo baskets to hold the charity buns, which were then sold to raise funds for local charitable organizations, collectively caring for the elderly in the community.

To ensure the success of the charity sale, the collaboration of multiple units was essential. Integrating the course with public welfare allows students, who are often glued to their smartphones, to temporarily set aside their digital devices and immerse themselves in a cause, learning the spirit of philanthropy beyond what textbooks can offer. The volunteer brothers and sisters from the Wang Family Courtyard demonstrated extraordinary efficiency, producing basket after basket of buns within the designated timeframe. Originally set at NT$15,000 for 50 baskets of buns, the final amount raised was NT$23,600, thanks to the efforts of students, community families, the Wang Family Courtyard volunteers, the Xinbei Zongneng Association, and every friend who supported this charitable cause. The entire sum was donated to the Huashan Foundation.

To deepen students' involvement in social practice and expand public benefits, in 2023, we plan to integrate courses on local culture, environmental education, and issues related to new immigrant families with themes of charity and public welfare. This integration aims to implement localized care and anticipates the addition of four course routes, involving 100 more students, with the aspiration to develop new models of mutual benefit and prosperity with the local community.
